Epiphany Proudfoot, the witchy love interest, is basically just a plot device with little in the way of nuances. Hope the late author runs no risk of being forgotten.

FALLING ANGEL by William Hjortsberg | Kirkus Reviews

BTW, Will, reading through this blog I’ve really hjortsbegg me want to seek out my horror books and start reviewing them. The book is full of bizarre occult references to New York Falling. The prose in this book are lean and mean with some great hardboiled one liners that certainly toss a grappling hook back to Raymond Chandler. I would not, therefore, recommend this as a mystery, but if you want a noir about doomed people in NY City you may enjoy it. Mickey Rourke, before he decided to let boxing mangle his face, plays Angel.

William Hjortsberg ‘Falling Angel’ Review

Twenty-five years ago Hjortsbergg saw the movie “Angel Heart”. Again, if only he had had a more original plot in which to couch his studies. This page was last edited on 12 Augustat It was the hand of emperors and assassins.

And now for the bad news: Robert McCammon had already seen Baal published inand though there were no novels inhe had two different ones come out in Favorite was busted up pretty bad in the war. Being a fan of the twisted supernatural story-line meets hard boiled detective, I instantly purchased it.

If the worst thing you can say about a book is that someone made a pretty good movie out of it, then that’s probably a pretty safe recommendation. Anyway the hjoftsberg angle is pretty nicely done.

And of course, I remembered the ending. Cyphre needs a missing crooner found, Johnny Favorite, who disappeared during World War II after been drafted during his swift rise to success, seriously wounded, and then returned to the states in a somewhat vegetative fallin.

Unlike the movie, the novel stays in New York State during the year And the finale is certainly unforgettable. For my review of this book, please click here still on Goodreads but different edition of the book!

Falling Angel

Robert De Niro plays Louis Cyphre, and he is suitably creepy for the role. Love when that happens!

It was a great time to be a reader and to be a writer of horror fiction. The crime noir styling blends quite well with the dark, satanic cult plotline; there is also a substantial amount of violence and gore. Just don’t do it!!!

The first, a novel about human brains kept alive by science, was inspired by an hjortsbrg remark Hjortsberg made at a cocktail party. Hjortsberg also does a wonderful job on the atmosphere of New York City in the ’50’s.
