In fact Saramago wrote this book in at a time when his own health was poor; he was eighty-three and suffering from leukaemia and there was a point around then when his own death was interrupted: If his style was adopted by the average unedited SPA it wouldn’t get the excuses let alone praise it does for this Intermitenciaas Prize winner.
